Wideband Sensing and Communication Transceivers

Tech ID: 34057 / UC Case 2024-99A-0

Brief Description

This technology represents a significant leap in miniaturization by combining millimeter-wave sensing and communications in a single chiplet.

Full Description

The benefits of millimeter wave sensing, such as high resolution, environmental robustness, wide field of view, and relatively long range are well-known and have driven its adoption in many fields. In some of these applications, these millimeter wave sensors need to communicate with other devices wirelessly. This invention reduces complexity, size, and cost by combining the transceiver used for sensing with the transceiver used for communications.By leveraging a single transceiver for two purposes, a single chiplet can replace multiple components on a end-user’s device.

Suggested uses

  • Internet of things (IOT) for positional sensors that require wireless communications
  • Traffic monitoring requiring sensors that communicate wirelessly over millimeter wave frequencies
  • Industrial automation using 5G communications protocols
  • Combining navigational sensing and communications functionality in drones
  • Remote crop monitoring

Advantages

  • Reduce the number of components needed required to provide communications and sensor functionality
  • Reduced footprint and lower costs for devices combining communications and sensor functionality
