Researchers at the University of California, Irvine have developed a novel micron-sized hybrid particle complex, consisting of an AAL linked to SPIO particles, that can be used as a multimodal imaging agent, as well as a drug delivery vehicle. Microfluidics technology is utilized for the precise control of particle composition, size, and polydispersity of these AAL-SPIO particles. These researchers have shown the use of low frequency radio waves to heat the SPIO component, thus effectively melting the lipid shell and releasing highly lipophilic drug contents within minutes of application.
Applications
With these multimodal hybrid particle complexes, diagnostics and therapeutics will no longer have to be sequential elements in patient care. These particles may be used simultaneously as a imaging agent and a drug delivery agent.
