The ability to detect and sort particles by type is important to many fields, such as medical diagnostics, environmental monitoring, and food safety.UCI researchers have developed a platform to sort and isolate particles from a turbid medium with minimal pre-processing. The platform is very desirable for applications in which enrichment of particles or biological substances at low concentrations is necessary.

Technology Description

In medical diagnostics, it is highly desirable to have platforms that can detect and sort particles for downstream characterization in a timely manner. Fast and early detection of pathogens can even be life-saving in medical situations such as sepsis. Current solutions for detecting and characterizing bacterial, viral, or parasitic pathogens such as culture, PCR, and flow cytometry, are encumbered by issues such as slow turn-around time, pre-processing, and the necessity of a non-turbid medium.

UCI researchers in the Laboratory for Florescence Dynamics have devised a platform for real-time particle detection and sorting. The device uses fluorescence measurements to identify particles and is capable of sorting particles of biological origin despite low input concentrations or a turbid medium.

This invention is important in the medical space because biological fluids, such as blood, is often turbid. Furthermore, pathogens can exist in biological fluids at very low concentrations and this technology will able to detect the desired target(s) nonetheless.
