The effective management of surgical operating rooms (OR) is crucial for safe, high quality, patient care. However, this can be very challenging due to the number of staff, patients, and rooms involved, combined with the necessary coordination of equipment, medications, and supplies. To address this important issue, the UCSF OR has developed a novel, easy to use tool to visualize and manage OR use in real-time.
CaseView is a web-based application that provides a daily view of past, present, and future OR cases on a user-friendly visual interface. It provides a complete top level view of call cases, in all rooms, for an entire day, at the times in which they occurred or are scheduled to occur. Detailed case information can then be obtained by clicking on an individual case. The display is automatically updated every few minutes from data stored in the PICIS OR Manager and currently OPTIME (since 2012) database, allowing real-time management of the OR. Other innovative features of CaseView include one-click access to preference cards, a visual comparison of the scheduled vs actual times of each case, blinking screen elements to alert the user to conditions requiring attention, and an overview of the current perioperative stage of each OR patient.
