Methods for disinfection and disinfestation of host materials have become increasingly important with tightened quality control mechanisms and increased consumer interest in high quality products. However, traditional disinfection methods use chemical fumigants, such as methyl bromide, that can be ozone scavengers and toxic to animals and humans. Therefore, there is a need for chemical-free disinfection and disinfestation techniques for agricultural and non-agricultural products.

 Researchers at the University of California, Davis have developed a method to non-invasively inhibit the presence of pests, bacteria, pathogenic or spoilage organisms in agricultural and non-agricultural products through the use of continuous radiofrequency (cRF) power. Radiofrequency (RF) heating is a process through which oscillating electric fields are generated at varying currents to heat materials with different dielectric properties. Selective heating is the method of choosing a particular frequency to heat a material or portion within material. The current technology manipulates this principle to induce lethal and sub-lethal thermal energy levels in pests, bacteria, pathogenic or spoilage organisms without inducing thermal energy or an irreversible change in the host material. This method is effective in products including, but not limited to: fresh fruit and vegetables, dry foods, processed foods, dairy products, food additives, wood, waste materials, soil, plants, synthetic fibers, man-made synthetics.
