The present invention is directed to plant genetic engineering through the modulation of the ethylene response sensor (“ERS”). In particular, ERS is directed to delaying senescence in plants through the inhibition of ethylene. An ERS transgenic plant's altered phenotype includes, but is not limited to, leaves that remain green late in the growing season, improved drought tolerance, improved silage, increased grain yield, and increased tolerance to planting at higher densities.
